Website: http://www.gpasi.org The GPAS was formed on February 13, 1946, when a small group of hobbyist gathered to discuss their fish. The Society was dedicated to working toward a Public Aquarium for Pittsburgh, encouraging and promoting interest in the study of fish and other aquatic life suitable to the aquarium, providing public displays, and furthering the scientific study of native, marine, and tropical fish. The founders were Father Ernest, Mary Hewitt, E.J. Halter, Larry Hogden, Father Innocent, Carl Kellerman, Jack Mason, Jack Pericht, Milton Rectanus, and Jack and Texas Rosenson. Over the next several years the Society grew from those eleven original members to a membership of over one hundred. On December 6, 1957, the Society received its charter as a Non-Profit Corporation of the State of Pennsylvania, to be known as The Greater Pittsburgh Aquarium Society. In the mid-1950’s the Society held its meetings at the King Estate near Highland Park (where the Board of Directors still hold its monthly meeting, generally the second Friday), but as the Society grew it became necessary to move the regular meetings to Buhl Planetarium. The early 1960’s saw the Society decline to a low point of only 51 members despite the tremendous growth taking place in the hobby. It is again on the upswing and will continue to grow through the aid and interest of all of its members. In looking forward to a very successful year, the officers and directors urge the cooperation of all tropical fish enthusiasts in this year of the realization of our first goal – a public aquarium for the City of Pittsburgh. |
